Budget Stay In Managua, Nicaragua

Unknown

After heading into Managua from Leon on a 2 hour and very inexpensive mini van ( just $2 ) I needed a place to lay my head for a couple of nights and with Costa Rica coming up which I hear is expensive, I didn’t want to part with too much cash.

I decided against a hostel and instead looked for budget hotel options, I found the Hotel Vanderbilt in the northern part of the city and for only $45 a night it fitted in with what I wanted to spend. There was two of us in a room with two double beds and doing it this way meant the cost of the stay came down.

We were greeted by a really helpful guy who, once sorting the details out, showed us to the room, it was everything you would expect from a good budget hotel. Both beds were comfortable, there was decent AC in the room and we even had a fridge to put our beers in.

The location of the hotel was excellent, a supermarket just 5 minutes away, right next to the national football stadium and attractions such as the Antigua Cathedral and the National Palace of Culture are either a 25 minute walk or a short taxi ride away. The surrounding area of the hotel is very local and certainly has character, I felt relatively safe walking around but I can imagine that a wrong turn or two made lead to some less friendly places. The hotel itself however is very secure, the front door remains locked and manned 24/7.

One thing I really liked about the room was the rear exit to a small courtyard with a table and a couple of loungers, perfect to get some work done in the Nicaraguan sun. The hotel is really quiet too, something of a novelty for, well anywhere in Latin America!

We were also able to make use of the kitchen that they have here, I’m not entirely sure if it’s for guests but the staff ad no issues at all in allowing us to use the facilities, a great option when there is a supermarket so close and you’re on a budget.

So if you are coming to Managua on your way to or from other parts of Central America and you just want somewhere quiet and well priced to enjoy your stay then this place is perfect for you. Safe, secure, comfortable and friendly.
